Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi-low begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi-low provides an exciting collection of betting possibilities and because you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, and many battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha High-Low.
