Pai Gow is played with 53 cards; the familiar 52-card common deck and a single joker. The player is dealt 7 cards faces showing and the croupier receives 7 cards face down.
A 5 card hand and a 2 card hand need to be put together from the 7 cards dealt, the five card hand must be stronger than the 2 card hand. To succeed, a player needs both of his hand totals to be better than the dealer’s.
